Self Portrait Challenge ~ "Self Portrait As..."

Self Portrait As...A Passionate Guitarist

This is a dream of mine, really. I often drift off into a fantasy world where I am sitting on a stage in an intimate venue, pouring my heart onto the strings. In my reality, it has been a struggle for me to learn how to play the guitar because my hands are so small (tiny fingers). Truly...I only know a few chords and the Virgo in me puts the pressure on to do it all so perfectly, so I tend to put the guitar down with a sigh and walk away from it for days, even months.

I was first inspired by my sister Darlene. In the 70's, I watched her sit around with her friends in a circle while she serenaded them with her long straight hair parted in the middle and wearing embroidered bell bottom jeans. I was sitting up on our stairs, looking down on her hippy self and wanting to BE her in that moment.

Then it was Jewel, Sarah, Ani, Abra and Beth that inspired me in my later years to pick it up and make this dream come true. I took some lessons at a sweet little cottage in Berkeley, CA from the coolest artsy gal pal. It was her that taught me the spirituality and deep romantic connection that can happen between you and an instrument. Watching her play was like watching two souls make love.

I did this self portrait series of me playing the guitar to make it my reality. My husband is going to teach me a song to move me beyond those few chords so that I may begin to create my own music.

I want to find that passion between woman and strings.

I’ve been playing guitar now for like ten years, and by all standards, I still suck, but it is the time I spend with the instrument that counts. There is nothing I like more than simply sitting with my guitar and trying to find new ways to make it sing. Sometimes out of nowhere a new riff or chord progression floats on down, and that is magic. Good luck and nice shots.

i began playing guitar when i was 15, but was discouraged as well by my own tiny hands. but eventually you learn to improvise so seamlessly that no one even notices. keep at it!

I love the photo. I only tried for less than a minute on the guitar thing. I just thought, "this hurts my fingers" and I stopped and never went back.

I saw this series on your flickr site and could hardly wait to see what you had to say. I also have dreams of really being able to play my guitar, but for now I'm content to just play and strum at it. I'm afflicted with tiny fingers as well. miss you...

Such a DREAMY photo Boho gal! My poor little child's guitar(I wanted to start small)is in my art room still in the box! I'll have to take a pic with it soon! I've seen the love between player and the instrument, my dad played guitar but mostly the fiddle! It's almost like a mistress! lol My husband's mistress is his little Sony radio! I bought him 30 years ago! xo

hehe. Another Virgo. I took guitar lessons years ago too and struggled because my hands are small. Of course, there's that bit of tone deafness as well. Have fun. Great picture.

Beautiful. This inspires me to dust off my guitar and try to remember a few cords... and perhaps some finger picking too.

You are so beautiful, truly. And the little glimpses of your personal space so much reflect the woman that you are. I love that about you - I love your true and honest heart.

I've always loved watching musicians play string instruments as well - the intimacy and beauty of it makes me swoon. So wonderful to hear that you're are searching for that same beauty.

Kisses, love.

I love how you said, "I want to find the passion between woman & strings" That was very profound. I had brought out my guitar the other day also, it popped a string, so I have to fix it to strum the 3 chords I know.

:) someday I too will learn that passion between a woman and her string, that's if I can stop breaking them!

Love your photography and your green wall!

I feel the same way. I have 2 guitars at home that I bought while I was in school. I haven't played in so long (probebly 4 years) b/c sometimes life gets in the way when you are busy making other plans.)I just want to jam, but I cant (little fingers too) so I get frustrated. Good luck with the lessons and you may have inspired me to do the same.

You look so beautiful, and natural with a guitar in your arms.

I lingered over each picture savouring all the details.

I too love the couch and the lights, all of it darling.

I came and visited this while you were gone, why I didn't post my comment through...puzzles me....must have been one of those moments when the babe was pulling at me while I was trying to get a minute on line:)

Hugs and kisses to you sweetness.
