self portrait challenge ~ environment

me in my kitchen, canon digital rebel xti

This months self portrait challenge is us in our environment.

Today has been a divine day. I walked for a long while on the beach listening to the Weepies on my iPod. Then I laid down a towel, sat up and watched all the kiddies learn how to surf with a cool organization called Surf Diva's. I know...only in Southern Cali.

I then took leisurely strolls through the aisles of Whole Foods Market to get some organic goodies for our next few meals. I usually run in and out and rarely take time to discover all their sweet funky products. Today I spent over an hour in there and stocked up on some healthy munchies for our camping trip next week.

I then came home and before I showered all the sand off, prepared for our dinner tonight. Anyone that has known me a long time knows that it is crazy that I am doing this. I never used to cook. Didn't enjoy it and never once thought about preparing a meal hours in advance!

I am a whole new me in the kitchen nowadays. I enjoy the process of cutting up and marinating...and taking my time. I know I am keeping our bodies alive and well with the special foods we prepare. It's sacred to me now. A way of being grateful to our Mother Earth and the nourishment provided for us.

Up above is a portrait of me today. If you were standing near me you'd smell ocean in my hair and see sand all over my skin. I worked hard all weekend and it felt good to play today.

I love where I live.

I think I've only ever commented once or twice but this post got me...andrea told me something once that I reaized I see so much in you. I was having a hard time and asked her how she seemed to get through all this stuff and she said just show up. That's it. So I said you mean be willing to do the work and she said even more simple than that. by just showing up we allow ourselves to be in that moment and something shifts within us and that is when the work starts inside of us without us having to do it or make ourselves do it. so somthing gets going even when we think it's too hard or too painful. Since I started reading your blog I get that from you each time I read and that is so powerful you allow yourself to just be in the moments and you aren't afraid of the work that things take. I admire you a lot and am always always inspired to get to know myself a little more each time I visit so thank you.

I've never been a fan of cooking but soon, we'll have a new kitchen and I find myself ordering cookbooks and watching cooking shows, dreaming.

Nice photo - your linky on SPC links to whole foods, thought you'd want to know. xo

What a wonderful day!

I had a dream last night of the ocean... I can still smell the crisp sea air... I can still see the moon reflecting off the water, and feel the water licking at my feet... I love where you live too.

Oh, and Whole Foods... yum!

I didn't like cooking until my late thirties and then it all clicked into place. There's a sweet contemplative rythym to cooking that is almost as good as the end product. So glad you had a relaxing day.

Where you live sounds fabulous...*sigh*

I adore Whole Foods!...they are building one "near" me about 40 minutes away...closer than the 1.5 hours I have to drive now.

Love the foto. Good for you that you have taken a whole new outlook to food preparation. It is great to be so kind to our bodies, and fun along the way isn't it?
Getting sand all over is like a gentle exfoliation don't ya think?
Whole Foods is a yummy place to wonder, I agree.
Thanks for sharing the inspiration and reminder to enjoy and take care of ourselves.

This is a great photo of you. It's amazing how when you think of food as nourishment, your perspective changes and it becomes a joy to take the time to prepare it. Food always tastes better when you put love into making it.
Oh.. and yes.. I love where you live too.
