acupuncture for labor*

A beautiful blog friend referred us to an Acupuncturist out here that is known to help induce labor if needed. His partner is a Doula, so he is well informed and sensitive to the needs of a woman in the beginning stages of labor that has been stalled.

K has never had acupuncture before and was really open to trying it. For someone who is not all that keen on needles, I was so proud of her bravery. When we walked into his office, we both took a deep breath. It was very soothing and light and nurturing.

He came out and sat across from us knee to knee and with a gentle, soft spoken voice, asked K many questions and talked her through how his treatment can help move the baby down and pull all her energy in a downward motion to get things moving.

When she was being treated, he came out to talk with me, sharing with me that he has worked with adoptive parents and birth moms before and finds the whole new concept of family so beautiful. He then handed me a few "Mothering" magazines and told me to keep them. He talked with me like I was already a parent and it just filled me up to brimming.

If she doesn't go into hard labor by today, she is going in again Friday for another treatment. We did notice that after her session, the baby had moved down a bit. When she first walked in, the top of her belly was tight and then when she left, it was softer and more fuller towards the bottom. He said this was a perfect sign that it is working.

We also took her to get a pedicure last night, which is also supposed to help along with an acupuncture treatment. During her pedicure, all of her pressure points were massaged that also help induce labor.

Its been a struggle to see her so uncomfortable and in pain but yet it is not moving as fast as everyone is expecting. We are doing our best to keep things light and fun so that the heaviness of the stress we all feel does not overwhelm our days.

Thank you so much for all of your support and wisdom. We feel certain that our little boy wanted to enter a world that already felt changed. He is riding on the wave of celebration with Obama being elected. We too are all celebrating with tears and hugs. K had said a few weeks ago that she hopes he waits until Obama is elected and now we already know our son is a good listener. ; )

{Gentle Favor: I received this comment in my previous post...

we gathered our faith community and asked for their prayers, and we ourselves began visualizing opening doors, penguins sliding into the water, otters, fast-motion flower blooming...anything even remotely related to dilation, effacement, and birth. Within 30 minutes she dilated & effaced fully and my nephew arrived not long after. Just goes to show you the combined power of the mind and spirit, and the love of good people.

If you find a quiet moment, can you all do this for us? We are so very grateful.}

Oh, I LOVE "Mothering" magazine! Another favorite (more literary) is "Brain, Child."

Come, baby, come! We want to see you!

Enjoy your time together and when the time is right little boho boy will come into being. Perhaps he is giving you and K time to establish a tight bond so that you will both have a life long friend to share your journey with.

Many blessings to you all,
Sheila

Bohos,

I am sending you all so much love and happiness. My birthday is Saturday the 8th, and I think it's a pretty fine day to be born (even if I am biased...)

Thinking of you all.

Denise aka Mama Boho,

Acupuncture is amazing! Also I'm a big fan of the birthing ball/exercise ball that was helpful in my pregnancies. Tell K that Acupressure points can work wonders, massaging the side of the hips while standing up is soothing too. Standing up a hot shower. Affirmations like...my baby is moving down my birth path...or I love my baby and my body...whatever mantra works for her she can visualize now as you can too...I had Handel playing prior to my birthing experience and then started playing while I was in labor. Also, bring her own pillow to the hospital and socks to keep her feet warm. Something comforting from home like the pillow and a focal point are soothing. I'm thinking of you.

You don't know me at all, and I think I've only commented here once or twice, but I've followed your story for a couple of years at least. As someone who years ago lost the only pregnancy I ever had, it has given me so much joy and healing to share this exquisitely beautiful unfolding of life and love. Sending best wishes for every kind of peace and happiness to all of you!

Love,
Paula

Team Boho Baby,
Pretty toes for the delivery! A plus for any mom.
Your story is bringing such amazing memories of my son's birth. The minute he is in your arms, be prepared for what I call the "momma lion" effect. It's instantaneous and moves through your body like lightning...and you realize that you will move mountains to protect and love your little one. The physical rush was out-of-this-world. Nothing like it.
Hugs all around. Can't wait to read the post that means he's finally here!

Because my first born was supposed to be a booked in caesarean but ended up being an early emergency caesarean and my second was booked in a week before the due date caesarean I never went through that waiting time that you are experiencing now. I remember having a shower on the morning of my sons birth thinking I am having my baby today... It was a weird feeling.

anyway my thoughts are with you...

With both of my girls I had natural drug free waterbirths with midwives. Most people have already mentioned what I found most helpful - lots of movement, essential oils, massage, and visualization. There were a few other things I found very helpful:
1 - Talking with my babies
2 - Praying
3 - Creating birth art (art and creativity does NOT come easy to me).
In talking with them I just shared my thougths and excitement on birthing them and welcoming them into the world. With praying I just let all of my emotions spill out and put my faith in God. In the birth art I drew, painted and sketched my visualizations and hopes for our birth. I realize you don't have a lot of time, but if you can get your hands on the book Birthing from Within (by Pam England I believe) it is an outstanding book and may be of some help.

Blessings, prayers and love to all of you!

Hi from New Zealand, I only discovered your blog recently and I have been following your journey and waiting to hear when you meet your son. For my second birth, I had acupunture during the labour and it was wonderful. I had a drug-free water birth with a midwife who sat back and let me and my husband have this very intense focused experience. Visualisation does help and being in water was key for me too as that is my way of feeling at peace. I am sending lots of good thoughts that it happens soon and is a beautiful experience

I am so excited for you, but I just have to ask...are you sure you want to encourage all these things to get the baby to come faster? If he's not due yet, then he's not full term and it's not the best idea to come out of there any earlier than he should. I know you're all excited about this, but think about what's best for him developmentally. All the best

This is off the topic at hand, but I thought you'd find it lovely to recall an entry you posted back in January about having decided that, no matter what, you will have a baby this year. And look! It's entirely possible that your son was being conceived that same day, isn't it? I think of that entry often. The power of visualization and affirmation has worked so well for you so far. (Hey, I bet it could hasten labor, too.) Can't wait to see this little guy... -Chan

Holy smokes! I check your blog from time to time, but October was insane and I don't think I ever stopped by....I saw the title of your post on Momma Zen/Karen's blog sidebar. I had no idea that you had been matched- I am so excited for you and boho boy.
In both of my labors I sat on the birth ball nearly the entire time and found it provided great relief.
May Boho Baby come exactly when he should.

I cannot help but feel this longer labour will be a great source of connection for all as the relationships develop. Everything happens for a reason.
